Arequipa is Peru’s most elegant city, a remarkable colonial collection of sillar (native white volcanic stone) constructions. Its complement of colonial buildings, which includes casonas (manor houses), convents and churches, are some of the most refined and historic in Peru. Yet the city, ringed by snow-capped volcanoes, is also well known for its excellent gastronomy - with a reputation for producing some of the finest dishes in the country - as well as gorgeous rural scenery only minutes away. Arequipa has quickly become a destination for outdoors enthusiasts and adventure travelers. Experiencing Arequipa means exploring its rich colonial heritage but also getting outdoors for whitewater rafting, biking and relaxed exploration of the beautiful countryside.

Although the province of Arequipa contains more coastline than any other in Peru, the capital city sits at 2,335 m / 8,379 ft. The second-largest city in Peru, Arequipa is notable not just for its size or commercial importance. Its illustrious history, culture and distinctive traditions make Arequipa one of Peru’s most important and independent-minded cities - a clear rival to Lima and Cusco on several levels. City natives, known as Arequipeños, are enormously proud of their city and region, which they view as wholly deserving of its fame.
