Arequipa Travel Guide
Off the beaten track
Whitewater Rafting on Río Chili: Arequipa’s main river, just outside the city, is the primary destination for whitewater rafting (class III & IV).

Santa Teresa Church and Monastery: Built in 1710, the church has a stunning silver altar with notable mestizo decorative elements and singular, invaluable items of colonial religious art. Still occupied by a small number of cloistered nuns, who live their lives dedicated to God secluded from the view of visitors. Melgar 303.

Tambos de Arequipa: On Calle del Solar, near the Puente Viejo (old bridge), are a collection of ancient 16th- to 18th-century tambos, being reconstructed by groups of neighbors determined to preserve and open them to tourism. The most notable tambos are: Matadero, de Bronce & La Cabezona.
