Arequipa in 1 day
With just one day in the city, we recommend a tour of the historic center, which includes Santa Catalina Convent, the Plaza de Armas, the Santa Teresa Monastery, a couple of the city’s other colonial-era churches and at least one of the Tambos de Arequipa (Matadero, Bronce y La Cabezona are among the best). In the afternoon, it’s worthwhile seeing the countryside just beyond the city, including Sabandía, the Mansión del Fundador, some of Arequipa’s agricultural fields, and Yumina, known for its sophisticated, ancient system of water canals and terraces.
Arequipa in 2 days
After spending day 1 as above, spend the next morning whitewater rafting on the River Chili, and in the afternoon visit the factory outlet of Incalpaca, where you can appreciate the entire process of alpaca wool making and textile techniques as well as purchase fine alpaca goods.
Arequipa in 3 days
On the 3rd day we recommend a horseback or mountain bike riding tour of the countryside, followed by a couple of the historic center’s other sights, such as Museo de Santuarios Andinos, colonial mansion Casa del Moral, and any of the Tambos de Arequipa or colonial churches not yet visited.

Ten years crisscrossing Peru, producing 240 TV programs on diverse topics. A journalist and writer, for nearly a decade he has directed and hosted the TV program Tiempo de Viaje, in which he travels throughout Peru (and occasionally other countries), documenting natural, historical and human scenes infrequently visited by conventional tourism. His perspective is not that of a tourist, but of a traveler, who immerses himself in what he finds and shies away from nothing in his reporting. He is also the author and/or publisher of an extensive series of books about Peruvian culture. |
