Where to shop

Arequipa is one of Peru’s finest shopping destinations, especially for alpaca goods and also handicrafts and silver jewelry.

Casona de Santa Catalina, Santa Catalina 210, and Patio del Ekeko, Mercaderes 141: 2 well-organized small shopping malls with a number of very good, upscale shops specializing in alpaca goods, handicrafts, jewelry, and food shops.

Dozens of good shops offering fine alpaca items are concentrated in 3 areas: the cloisters next to La Compañía church, Pasaje Catedral, the pedestrian mall just behind the cathedral, and Calle Santa Catalina. Also of great interest is the Incalpaca (Grupo Inca) factory outlet about 10 minutes outside of town in the Tahuaycani district (Av. Juan Bustamante s/n); the group owns Kuna, one of Peru’s best-known alpaca fashion brands, and the factory shop features rare and expensive vicuña items and illustrates the entire alpaca wool-making process. A similar option is Mundo Alpaca (Grupo Michell), owners of the well-known brand Sol Alpaca, found on Plaza San Lazaro.
