Chachapoyas Travel Guide
Off the beaten track
Laguna de los Cóndores: 2,600 m.s.n.m.  (8,530 ft. above sea level)
In 1997 a group of archaeologists discovered some 280 Chachapoya mummies, at a height 100 m (328 ft.) above the Laguna de los Cóndores. These remains of important Chachapoyadignataries had remained there, untouched, for more than 500 years. Buried alongside the mummies were 3,000 pieces of great archaeological and historical value (ceramics, idols, spears, and beautiful wooden statues from both the Chachapoya and Inca cultures). After a period of research, the mummies and artifacts found in the tombs were transferred to the Leymebamba Museum,  45 km (28 miles) from the Laguna de los Cóndores (accessible only by foot or horseback) and 93 km (58 miles) from Chachapoyas.

Bagua: In a remote, pastoral zone rich with flora and fauna, this Amazonian city lies on the right bank of the Utcubamba River, 104 km (65 miles) from the city of Chachapoyas. Because of the immense diversity of its natural attractions, it holds some of the greatest ecotourism potential in northern Peru.

Highlights include:

  • Cataratas de Numparket(Numparket Falls): a dazzling waterfall with a drop of more than 90 m (295 ft.). 40 km (25 miles) from Bagua.
  • Pongo de Rentem: 2 km (1 mile) at its widest, this natural wonder constitutes an adventurous and difficult river passage at the confluence of the Marañón, Utcubamba and Chinchipe Rivers, with thermal baths on the right bank of the Marañón. 14 km (9 miles) from Bagua, following the internal CarreteraBagua-Imazita
