Chivay market
Chivay’s sprawling market, open daily, is a great place to walk around and pick up local items, including the region’s famous embroidered items and hats.
Patapampa & Cruz del Condor
Local women selling alpaca goods and other handcrafts are out in force at both these spots, popular with the legions of travelers to Colca. Especially at chilly Patapamapa (4,910m/16,100 ft.), you may want to pick up a sweater or scarf! Patapampa is an especially photogenic spot: surrounded by volcanoes in all directions, the road is lined with apachetas – small stacks of stones (travelers leave a single stone as an offering at high points, which to them signfies proximity to Apu spirits, or gods) that for generations in Andean cultures have served as tributes to the divine Apus who inhabit the mountains. Especially in the afternoon, it’s a mesmerizing sight.
Embroidery
Handmade embroidered items are available for purchase every night at Casa Andina – Colca, where an artisan demonstrates embroidery technique employed in local dress.

Ten years crisscrossing Peru, producing 240 TV programs on diverse topics. A journalist and writer, for nearly a decade he has directed and hosted the TV program Tiempo de Viaje, in which he travels throughout Peru (and occasionally other countries), documenting natural, historical and human scenes infrequently visited by conventional tourism. His perspective is not that of a tourist, but of a traveler, who immerses himself in what he finds and shies away from nothing in his reporting. He is also the author and/or publisher of an extensive series of books about Peruvian culture. |
